We've all heard how important it is to reuse things when we can — like using cloth grocery bags instead of bringing home new plastic bags with each trip to the store. So you might think reusing your print cartridges would be a great way to reduce your environmental impact. But the truth may surprise you. Choosing reliable Original HP cartridges, and then recycling them through the HP Planet Partners program, can actually be better for the environment and your wallet.
HP is committed to environmental stewardship. The HP Eco Solutions
program makes it easier than ever to identify HP innovations, products and services that can reduce your environmental impact and save you money while delivering the high quality you can count on.
Recycling that's easy and effective
The HP Planet Partners program
, a part of HP Eco Solutions, is available in more than 49 countries and territories, and offers recycling and convenient return options for recycling HP print cartridges. What's more — it's free.1
When you recycle your HP print cartridges through HP Planet Partners, you can be sure they won't end up in a landfill.
That's not the case with remanufactured ink and toner cartridges. Many remanufacturers collect used cartridges — but if they can't be profitably reused, the cartridges can end up in a landfill. A 2008 report revealed that U.S. and European remanufacturers are more likely to throw away the unusable print cartridges and components they collect than to recycle them.2
Remanufacturers prefer to work with cartridges that have never been remanufactured.2
So even if cartridges are reused, it's likely they will only be reused once, delaying their trip to the landfill, but not necessarily preventing it.
Designed with the environment in mind
As a part of HP Eco Solutions, HP's Design for Environment
program helps ensure that HP LaserJet and inkjet print cartridges use materials efficiently, are easy to recycle and reduce environmental impact. Through design innovation, HP has cut the average number of component parts used in HP LaserJet monochrome cartridges by a third, and the average number of plastic resins used by more than half, which makes them easier to recycle.3
The HP “closed loop” inkjet recycling process is an industry first that combines recycled inkjet cartridge material with recycled water bottles to create new Original HP inkjet cartridges. And HP LaserJet and inkjet print cartridges have been engineered to use recycled plastic without sacrificing quality and reliability. So when you choose HP, you know you're getting the best of everything — high quality and a reduced environmental impact.
Smart use, not reuse
It turns out paper consumption during printing — not manufacturing — is the largest contributor to the environmental impact of a toner cartridge, according to a 2008 life cycle assessment (LCA) study.4
Choosing a cartridge that provides better quality prints, so you don't have to reprint is a better choice for the environment and can save you money too.
Using Original HP print cartridges can help you conserve paper and energy, save money and reduce your environmental impact. During third-party tests by QualityLogic Inc., Original HP LaserJet print cartridges outperformed remanufactured toner cartridges in both reliability and print quality consistency.5, 6
That means less wasted paper and energy and fewer trips to the store for supplies.
